About Implementation Research

Implementation research (IR) improves our understanding of real-world factors and their influence on the implementation of clinical trials and health interventions. It is a critical approach for all stakeholders in the sector to improve the execution of health projects in real-world settings.

As defined by WHO TDR, IR is a systematic approach focused on identifying and addressing barriers that impede the effective implementation of health interventions, strategies, and policies. It is demand-driven, with research questions framed around the needs identified by stakeholders and implementers within the health system.

IR plays an important role in designing strategies to overcome obstacles that prevent innovative and proven public health interventions from reaching those who need them most. This includes addressing challenges related to the adoption of drugs, diagnostics, or preventive measures aimed at improving the health of individuals at risk of diseases such as malaria, tuberculosis, NTDs, and other infectious conditions. By ensuring health solutions are effectively delivered and utilised, IR contributes to better healthcare outcomes and more efficient delivery of health services.

About CREDO (Clinical Research Excellence and Development Opportunity) Events

Marieme Ba, founder and CEO of Pharmalys Ltd, a Contract Research Organisation that initiates and conducts clinical trials, as well as trains professionals involved in clinical research, launched the CREDO (Clinical Research Excellence & Development Opportunity) initiative in 2022.

Clinical Research (CR) generates robust data that informs health policymakers and leads to market authorisations for new drugs and vaccines. Promoting CR has always been a key priority for Marieme, who strongly believes that conducting CR in Africa, in particular, is essential.

This belief led to the creation of the CREDO initiative, which is institutionally sponsored by Pharmalys Ltd. CREDO is a non-profit organisation dedicated to promoting CR in Africa by building a community of researchers, research centres, and young students aspiring to enter the field. The initiative shares knowledge and experiences in health research through various media, including expert interviews, articles, and webinars targeted at health and clinical research professionals.

The inaugural CREDO event was a hybrid conference hosted within the Infectious Diseases Department of the main teaching hospital in Dakar. Titled ‘Clinical Trials in Africa: Impact, Know-how, and Perspectives’, the conference opened with an introduction to clinical trials and later focused on vaccine trials across Africa. It also explored the impact of CR on health systems, along with its social, societal, and economic implications for the continent. The panel featured distinguished speakers, including A. Dicko from Mali, G. Mombo-Ngoma from Gabon, M. Seydi from Senegal, S.B. Sirima from Burkina Faso, S. Sow from Mali, and S. Viviani from Italy. Approximately 100 attendees participated in the event.

Feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with many attendees describing the event as a high-level conference and praising the expert insights provided by the panel.

The 28 November 2024, CREDO will host its second conference, which will be a 100% online webinar. With your support, we aim to organise events like this every two years and further develop the CREDO initiative, regularly offering valuable information to the scientific community. We hope you will join us!
