A Year of Growth and Discovery: Reflections from a Clinical Project Manager at Pharmalys Ltd

Pharmalys Ltd is a regional Contract Research Organisation (CRO) that has seen significant growth over the past three years. Headquartered in Europe with regional offices in Dakar, Pharmalys supports sponsors around the world in conducting safe and high-quality pan-African clinical research. Our mission is to improve health outcomes through data excellence. To achieve this, we operate across several European countries and nearly half of the African continent, always adhering to international standards in health research.

For years, Pharmalys has been committed to advancing clinical research in Africa, driven by the dedication and expertise of our team members. Today, we are excited to share Ndeye’s reflections on her first year with us as a Clinical Project Manager – a year marked by growth, learning, and discovery.

Navigating Complex Research Environments

Over the past year, I have been involved in various clinical studies across Africa and the UK, navigating the unique challenges and rewards that come with working in such diverse settings. One of the highlights from my first year was my role in the startup of a clinical study on Schistosomiasis in Madagascar. Conducted in partnership with the Madagascar Institute for Vaccine Research (MIVR), this project demonstrated the importance of careful planning and strong partnerships. A well-organised pre-initiation visit played a critical role in ensuring a smooth study launch, enhancing local staff training, and building a strong relationship with the investigator site.

The Role of Community Health Workers

In my reflections, I also underscore the vital role of community health workers in the clinical research process in Africa. These professionals are the crucial link between the local communities participating in clinical studies and the investigational site’s staff. Their work is essential in fostering trust, ensuring clear communication, and strengthening collaboration between the community and research team – factors that are vital for the success and integrity of studies conducted on the continent.

Overcoming Challenges in Multicultural Settings

This year has also brought its share of challenges. Effective communication in multicultural environments, often complicated by language barriers, required adaptability and resilience. Fortunately, the training I received, particularly in soft skills through Yellow, gave me the tools I needed to navigate these situations successfully.

Collaboration and Team Support

Beyond the projects and challenges, what truly stands out for me this year has been the incredible support and camaraderie within the Pharmalys team. The encouragement and expertise of my colleagues have been instrumental in my professional and personal growth, reinforcing the collaborative spirit that drives our success.

As we look to the future, we remain committed to our mission of advancing clinical research in Africa and we are excited about the opportunities and projects that lie ahead.

Ndeye Seck,

Clinical Project Manager, Pharmalys Ltd
